T-shirts are for rebels… May 17, 2006
Since way back in the 60’s t-shirts have been there on the front line. Whatever the argument, whatever the cause - politics, Vietnam, union rights, love & peace, punk, you name it, the rebel t-shirt was there. Today, some of the issues might have changed along with a president or two but t-shirts are still saying it loud and proud.
One of today’s big issues, as far as Zoozoo2 is concerned is the environment and fair trade. Some of us are even trying to change the very fabric of the rebel t-shirt.
No longer can we justify wearing traditionally produced t-shirts, made in the vast sweat shops of China where workers rights and environmental concerns mean nothing as long as global western clothing companies in Europe and the USA continue to worship profit at any cost.
According to the Sustainable Cotton Organisation, conventional cotton farming has a seriously destructive effect on the environment. It seems the simple act of growing and harvesting the one pound of cotton fiber needed to make a t-shirt (or any other conventional cotton product) takes an enormous toll on the earth’s air, water, and soil, and significantly affects the health of people living in cotton growing areas.
The conventional garment industry has long stayed silent to the collective environmental toll on the planet through conventional clothing production processes. It continues to use toxic pesticides and harmful dyes, cause pollution to water and the destruction of wildlife as well as supporting child labour and sweatshop practices in developing countries. All in the pursuit of cheap clothing and big profits.
However, as we are always saying the individual can make a difference. We as consumers, can make our buying choices count. For many of us we are what we wear, we are making a comment about ourselves. Whether it is one of style, affluence, inclusiveness or fashion victim, it is time to wear the new generation of rebel t-shirt. It’s cool to care. It’s cool to wear Zoozoo2.
Real surfers and snowboarders (and I don’t mean fashion surfers) have always been outsiders, willing to ride a different path regardless of the consequences. Now is the time.
