frost bite

  • Frost bite occurs when the body is exposed to long extreme periods of cold or icy winds. The cold causes the blood vessels to constrict, it stops the blood circulation to the affected areas, this is usually the extremities, the face, fingers, ears, nose, and toes. These body parts are commonly left uncovered and can freeze quickly. Important signs of danger are initial pain, swelling, white skin, numbness and eventually loss of function and absence of pain. Blisters may also develop. If symptoms are detected it is important to get medical help immediately!

The best way to avoid getting frostbite is to stay warm. It is important to wear layered clothing to stay warm and dry. Several layers of thin clothing are warmer than one thick layer.
