Scuba diving terms, definitions and scuba diving slang

Here are a few scuba diving terms so you don't feel out of place in the water.

  • Ambient light - Available sunlight underwater or "Natural light" used as a source of illumination
  • ABLJ - Adjustable buoyancy life jacket
  • Air hog Diver- Apparently one who sucks tank dry in record time
  • AOW - Advanced Open Water (PADI qualification)
  • Atmospheric pressure - The amount of pressure the air around us exerts on our bodies at sea level
  • Backpack - Holds a tank securely on a diver's back
  • Backscatter - When suspended particles in the water are illuminated by light from a flash, they reflect the light back at the lens
  • BCD - Buoyancy Control Device
  • Bends - Decompression sickness
  • Bow - The front of a boat
  • Breath-hold diving - Diving without life support apparatus, while holding your breath
  • BSAC - British Sub-Aqua Club. The BSAC is the governing body for scuba diving in the UK
  • BTU - British Thermal Units
  • Buoyancy - Upward force exerted on an object in liquid. Does it float or sink
  • C-card - Divers certification card
  • CMAS - Confédération Mondiale des Activities Subaquatiques (World Underwater Federation of Underwater Activities)
  • D.A.N - Divers Alert Network
  • Decompression sickness - A painful and life threatening condition
  • EAN - Enriched Air Nitrogen - Nitrox
  • HWL - High water level
  • Hydro - Hydrostatic testing for tank integrity
  • LWL - Low water level
  • MHW - Mean high water
  • MLW - Mean low water
  • NAUl - National Association of Underwater Instructors
  • NOAA - National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association
  • OEA - Oxygen Enriched Air; Nitrox
  • PAD - Professional Association of Diving Instructors
  • Port - The left side of boat when facing the bow
  • psiI - Pounds per square inch
  • Regulator - A device that changes the air pressure from one level to a lower level
  • SAA - Sub Aqua Association
  • Scuba - S elf Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus
  • Snorkel - A hollow tube swimmers or divers use to breathe through when they are close to the surface. You all know that one
  • Submersible pressure gauge - SPG This allows the diver to monitor the amount of air in the tank during submersion
  • Visibility - As the3 name suggests this is the distance a diver can see underwater measured in feet or meters
  • y-valve - Tank valve with two outlets. Dual orifice (Y) Valve
