surfing - for beginners by a beginner

surfing basics

Here are a few very basic but important surfing rules for beginners (Hodad's and Shubee's). Remember surfing is cool but it can be dangerous especially for a beginner.

  • Swim. It sounds obvious but don’t surf if you cannot swim. Learn to swim first then learn to surf

  • Care. look out for other surfers and swimmers. Check the surfing conditions and where you are surfing in relation to the beach the rocks and others in the water

  • Danger. Pollution aside probably the most potentially dangerous object in the water is your own and other surfers surfboards

  • When to let go. This may sound silly but you need to know when to hold onto your board and when to let it go.If you are about to wipe-out then let it go.You are more likely to get injured if you hang on to it as it get thrown around

  • Rips. I am sure you already know but this is a basic list after all. Remember a rip is a strong current that goes straight out to sea. If you get caught by one do not panic. Paddle across the rip not against it until you have managed to break free of it [see waves]

  • Comfort Zone. You should only surf in waves that you are comfortable in, don't get in over your head [see waves]

  • Eating. Don’t go surfing or swimming for at least 45 mins after a meal sounds obvious really

  • Who's first. Don’t take someone else’s wave. The normal rule is the surfer who is closest to the breaking wave has priority

  • Practice. Practice makes a good surfer. It’s no good just talking about. Get out there and do it.

  • Keeping fit . Surfing can be hard work so make sure you are physically fit. You should to be able to swim back to shore if you lose your board in a medium swell

  • Going it alone. It’s a good idea to surf with someone else if you can. You never know what is under the water. It’s also a lot more fun surfing with friends

  • Surf Conditions. Always check the surf is safe before you go in.It’s easy to ask others around you who know
    [see waves]

  • Patrolled Zones . If you are surfing on a patrolled and flagged beach keep within the surfing zone

  • Warming-up. Like any other sport really. Always do some warm up stretches before you surf otherwise you a likely to pull a muscle

  • Sun Block. It is important to use a good high factor sunblock (waterproof). It’s also a good idea to wear a UV proof rash vest for body protection if your not wearing a wetsuit

  • Fun fun fun . Lots of it. Surfing is about having fun but have fun safely

  • Surf Aid Kit [see surf aid kit]
