surfing basics - your first board

Beginners guide to surfing

How to pick your first surfboard. Boards come in many shapes and sizes and can cost a lot of money. If your a beginner where do you start?.

  • Surfboard - A second hand board is the cheapest option if you are just starting. Why spend a lot of money before you even know if surfing is for you. Better still borrow one. Anyway your first board is going to take some knocks and if it is second hand then you won't feel bad about it.

  • Usually the longer the board, the easier it is to learn on. Take someone who knows about boards with you when you buy it.

  • It's going to be a lot easier if you start by learning on a longboard than a short one the bigger the better.

  • Ask lots of questions, no two boards are the same.

  • Foamies as they are called are the ideal board for beginners and are used in surf schools for beginners. As the name says they are made of foam. The next type up is a' Pop out'. These are also made of foam but with a thick fibre glass and they really float well. It is much easier to learn the basics of surfing on a longboard than it is on a shortboard.

  • Never have you board between you and an oncoming wave. It will hurt

  • Never push your board out fin first.

  • If you come off your board in a wave make sure you cover your head until you know where the board is.

  • Remember surfing is great fun but it can also be very dangerous. Get some proper training right from the start.

  • Leash - The leash is to keep you and your board together. I'm sure you guessed that. Strap the leash to your ankle so the board doesn't get out of your control and potentially hurt you or other surfers. A loose board is dangerous it can hit you or someone else on the head. However, remember don't start thinking your leash is your lifesaver it is not. So do not get out of your depth
