surfology - wipeout

Wipeouts happen all the time no matter what your level of experience. The trick is to try an avoid mishaps when it does happen.

The first thing to do is be aware of the area in which you are surfing. If it is new to you ask someone else, other surfers, lifeguards, locals. There may be hidden dangers not instantly obvious to the eye.

When you are caught in a wipeout there are a few simple steps you can take;

  • make sure you put some distance between you and your board. You don't want it landing on your head
  • you will need air so make sure you take a deep breadth on hitting the water. A big wave can keep you under for a while
  • curl the body while covering the head and face helps, there could be rocks or other hard obstacles. Also your board could be coming your way. Protect yourself
  • Once you surface try and get hold of your leash and grab your board
  • If you are injured stay with your board if your can then try to signal help
  • Most of the time a wipeout on a safe beach is nothing more than an uncomfortable experience but it is better to be prepared.
